Rhinelander Building Inspection Department

Permits are required for the following:

¨New construction or an addition to a building
¨Remodeling of a house or other building.
¨Construction of a detached garage, lean-to, storage building, gazebo, any type of accessory building, etc, or any additions or alterations thereto. NOTE: canopy (tent-like) structures are permitted with proper permit and only for a specified period of time.
¨Construction or reconstruction of a deck, stoop, porch, or ramp (including patios and walkways).
¨Residing of a building
¨Replacement of roof decking/sheathing or replacement of any part of a roof system, including replacement of shingles.
¨Replacement of windows and doors.
¨Installation of new windows.
¨Replacement of heating units and hot water heaters.
¨Installation of air conditioning units. (Exception: a permit is not required for window-mounted units.)
¨Installation of electrical circuitry.
¨Installation or replacement of plumbing fixtures (where piping needs to be reconstructed during replacement of the fixture).
¨Demolition of a building (entire building or interior demolition included).
¨Construction of a retaining wall (2’ or more in height - from ground level).
¨Fence Installation or replacement there of.
¨Work being done in the Right-Of- Way.

Permits are not required for:

¨General maintenance done to the home in the amount of $500.00 or less (including materials and labor) over the course of one (1) year.
¨Interior or exterior painting, wallpapering.

When and where can you obtain a permit? The City Inspection Department is located at the Rhinelander Fire Department, 128 West Frederick Street, Rhinelander. The office is open from 8:00am - 12:30pm and 1:30pm to 4:30pm.
